Quick Tips: Whose vs Who’s

This grammar rule trips up lots of people, but there is a really easy way to remember whether you need to use ‘whose’ or ‘who’s':

If you can replace it with ‘who is’ or ‘who are’, then you should use ‘who’s‘.

Remember: Apostrophes in words signpost missing letters.

Whose‘ sits before a noun to state or ask about possession.

For example:

  • Who’s [Who has] eaten all the pies?
  • Whose sonic screwdriver is this?
  • Daryl is the one who’s [who is] going to save us from the zombies.
  • I would like to know whose books these are.
